The main reasons for the decline of our beach over the years have been a combination of tidal erosion and subsidance under the bay, thought to be the result of collapsed mine shafts.

To adress the tidal erosion issue, international sea defence specialists, Westminster Dredging Company Ltd., are constructing a special offshore breakwater which will be 200 metres long, and 300 metres offshore, in the centre of the bay.
